PRESS RELEASE

The Society for Reproductive Biology (SRB), Society for Reproduction and Fertility (SRF) and the Society for the Study of Reproduction (SSR) have announced that Professor Francesca Duncan of the Northwestern University (USA) is the 2024 Recipient of the RV Short Medal and Lecture.

Professor Duncan, who obtained her PhD at the University of Pennsylvania, is the Thomas J. Watkins Professor of Reproductive Science in the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University, and is a world leader in her specialist area of female reproductive ageing. Her research has helped define changes that occur within the ovary during the ageing process and her work has significantly enhanced our understanding of premature ovarian ageing/early menopause and the development of ovarian cancer. Most recently, she has been awarded funds from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation to investigate non-hormonal methods of female contraception.

The three societies that sponsor and administer the Short Medal are each engaged in advancing science to support reproductive health in humans and animals. The societies are based in Australasia (SRB), United Kingdom (SRF) and North America (SSR). The Medal was developed to celebrate the remarkable and creative contributions of the late Professor Roger Short of the University of Melbourne. Some of his accomplishments and remarkable wit can be sampled at https://www.science.org.au/learning/general-audience/history/interviews-australian-scientists/professor-roger-short

The Medal will be presented to our awardee in a ceremony in the autumn in which Professor Duncan will deliver the 2024 RV Short lecture.
